Les Rencontres Scientifiques d'IFP Energies nouvelles
Lyon, France 25 - 27 January 2012

Context and Objectives

Sustainable development demands processes that are more efficient, more acceptable to society and leave a smaller environmental impact. To meet these goals, which involve both innovation and intensification, materials and processes need to be optimized based on a detailed description of physical phenomena and chemical reactions. Integrated multidisciplinary approaches are required, examining complex, non-linear, non-equilibrium phenomena occurring on different length and time scales. Multiscale approaches rely on upward and downward cascades of information between small scales and larger ones. A good understanding of the interplay between these phenomena on different scales is necessary.

In recent years, significant progress has been made on a variety of levels, both experimentally and computationally, with the description of catalysts, adsorbents, complex feedstocks and multiphase flows. Individually, these efforts have already had an impact on process design and modeling and process performance. Multiscale approaches are now emerging in force, offering significant opportunities for innovation.

This international conference therefore aims to bring together scientists working in the fields of molecular modeling, molecular reconstruction and reaction modeling, fluid dynamics, process design and simulation. It will be an opportunity to examine current research using multiscale approaches in these fields and to evaluate the potential of more integrated studies.
Players from the worlds of academic research, applied research and industry will discuss research advances, potential applications and the various challenges to be met.
